Calgary Flames head coach Ryan Huska is getting some recognition around the league after an impressive 2024-25 season.
Though the Flames were unable to make the playoffs, they remained in the battle right until the end. Huska’s defensive-style systems played a big role in that, and it was clearly noticed. This morning, it was announced that the 49-year-old will serve as an assistant coach to Dean Evason for Canada at the upcoming Men’s World Championship.

This is a major honour for Huska, who has only served as a head coach for two NHL seasons to date. Prior to getting a head coaching role with the Flames, he served as an assistant for five seasons and has also spent several years in both the WHL and AHL in a head coaching role.
Huska is far from the only Flames representative at the upcoming tournament. Mikael Backlund recently confirmed he will be suiting up for Sweden, as will defenceman Rasmus Andersson. Meanwhile, MacKenzie Weegar (Canada), Zayne Parekh (Canada), Matt Coronato (USA), and Dan Vladar (Czechia) will also be at the event. Both Dustin Wolf and Blake Coleman are continuing to weigh their options but haven’t ruled it out.
This year’s tournament, scheduled to take place from May 9 to May 25, will occur in Stockholm, Sweden, as well as Herning, Denmark. Although it isn’t the hockey fans in Calgary who were hoping to be watching this spring, the World Championship is one worth tuning into, given the Flames’ representation both on the ice and behind the bench.
