Calgary Zoo celebrates baby gorilla Kimani's 1st Birthday

Mar 9 2017, 6:15 am

The Calgary Zoo’s little one is turning one tomorrow and you’re invited to the party!

Kimani, the Calgary Zoo’s youngest Western lowland gorilla turns one March 9, and to celebrate the zoo is throwing a big party.

“This has been an incredible year of growth for Kimani as she was born underweight which required special care from our Animal Care and Veterinary teams,” says Dr. Malu Celli, Curator at the Calgary Zoo in a release. “We can happily report that, while still tiny, she is thriving and doing exceptionally well with a caring mother and an attentive troop of female gorillas to watch over her.”

If you’d like to give Kimani a present, the Zoo is asking you bring along your used cell phones so they can recycle them in lieu of gifts.

The coltan found in cellphones comes from Congo where gorillas lives. By recycling these devices, the need to mine for coltan in the forests diminishes, which ultimately can help to protect this critically endangered species.

Pretty cool Calgary Zoo, pretty cool.
