Calgary Wild FC have partnered with the Alberta Women’s Health Foundation (AWHF) to make some exciting changes for the city’s newest pro sports team.
One of those changes includes a name change, at least in theory, for McMahon Stadium, the building which serves as their home.
In a playful new twist, they are now referring to the stadium as McWomahon. The Wild describe it as a symbolic nod to the fact that women’s sports and health are finally taking centre stage.
“We didn’t actually change the name, but we are changing the conversation,” said Lindsay
Robertson, vice president of communications, marketing and brand of the AWHF. “For too long, women have been expected to fit into systems that weren’t originally designed with them in mind—in sport, health care, and beyond.”
For the next six weeks, Calgarians will see digital displays and “McWomahon” advertisements across the city as part of this campaign. The purpose behind this is to get people talking about women’s health and equity.
Another exciting element is that the two parties have combined to launch a season-long 50/50 program. The AWHF will serve as the sole beneficiary.
The funds raised from the season-long 50/50 program are aimed at advancing women’s health research and care throughout the entire province. This will include help for more than 170 researchers working in areas including pregnancy and postpartum care, hereditary cancers, chronic conditions impacting women, Indigenous women’s health equity, and gender bias in sport science and medicine.
“What began as an opportunity to build awareness around women’s health has grown into
something much bigger,” said Robertson. “This partnership is helping generate real
investment in women’s health research while connecting us with entirely new audiences
through the power of sport.”
The Wild FC are part of the Northern Super League, a pro women’s sports league which had its inaugural season in 2025. The league currently has six teams: Vancouver Rise FC, Halifax Tides FC, AFC Toronto, Montreal Roses FC, and the Ottawa Rapid FC.
The Wild FC have played just two of 25 games so far this season, meaning that there are still 23 games left on their schedule, 11 of which will be played at McMahon Stadium. The first of those 11 remaining home games will come this Saturday against the Roses FC.
