Calgary Surge looking to accomplish impressive playoff feat for third straight year

The Calgary Surge are preparing for a do-or-die outing this evening against the Edmonton Stingers in the CEBL playoffs.

The Surge come into this game as slight favourites, having finished the season with a 17-7 record, second to only the Vancouver Bandits in the Western Conference. The Stingers aren’t a team to sleep on, however, as they finished third in the West with a 15-9 record.

The Alberta rivals will be going head-to-head in the Western Conference play-in this evening at Winsport. Should the Surge pick up a victory, it will mark their third-straight time advancing to the Western Conference Semi-Final.

The Surge were able to defeat the Winnipeg Sea Bears in the play-in last season, before then knocking off the Stingers in the Western Conference Semi-Final. Their run ended shortly after, however, as the Bandits eliminated them in the Conference Final.

The season prior, the Surge were able to advance all the way to the Championship Final, where they fell to the Scarborough Shooting Stars 82-70.

This time around, the Surge will be looking for a different ending, and it all begins this evening. Should they defeat the Stingers, they will advance to the West Semi-Final to play the top-seeded Bandits. The winner of the Semi-Final will then face the Sea Bears in the Conference Final, who are the Championship Weekend hosts this year.

It’s been quite a run for the Surge, who have advanced to at least the Conference Final in each of their first two seasons after debuting in 2023. That streak has a chance to stay intact should they get past the Stingers this evening, where tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. MDT.
