Stephen Avenue construction just crossed into a new phase

If you’ve been downtown recently, you most likely have noticed construction along Stephen Avenue, and there are some new updates to the project.

Construction on the Stephen Avenue Revitalization Project started back in July 2025, with work beginning on the east side of the 100 SE block, between 1st Street SE and Centre Street, in an effort to revitalize the area.

Following the completion of the underground utility upgrades in 2025, the project is now moving into its next phase. As of March 2026, crews have shifted to surface-level work, focusing on areas adjacent to building fronts.

This phase includes installing new granite pavers, upgraded lighting, traffic signals, landscaping, street furniture, like benches and bike racks, water fountains, and automatic bollards at key intersections.

During construction, access to businesses will be maintained with temporary ramp bridges in places to help customers navigate around the work zones.

If you’re worried about construction affecting the beloved patio season or any Stampede festivities on Stephen Avenue, there’s no need to worry. The City says that construction will pause for the summer, and patios on Stephen Avenue will be able to open in time for Stampede 2026.

The new phase also includes a new raised intersection at Centre Street and 8th Avenue SE. Construction on this intersection is expected to take place in Fall 2026.

During construction, the intersection will be closed for approximately four weeks, depending on the weather, starting in late September or early October.
