It might only be January, but it’s never too early to start planning for the next Calgary Stampede.

Kicking off events, as per tradition, is the annual Stampede Parade, and organizers have announced that they are now taking applications for groups who would like a coveted spot in the parade lineup.

“The Stampede Parade is Calgary’s premier showcase for dozens of charitable, community and social groups, along with our resilient corporate community, coming together to celebrate what makes Calgary great,” said Parade Committee Chair, Jennifer Evangelista, in a release.

“In addition to the many colourful floats, crowd-favourite horse entries, and the amazing marching bands that will make their way down the 4.8 km route, we will have the Parade Prelude, featuring many of Calgary and area’s entertaining dance troupes, musical performers, and other street entertainers.”

Applications to be a part of the parade must be received by January 31, and can be submitted through the Calgary Stampede’s website.

Those who do find themselves marching along Calgary’s streets come July won’t only be seen by the estimated 350,000 in-person spectators — they will also be seen live by a regional and national television audience estimated at nearly two million.
