Calgary sports radio announcement imminent: report

Five weeks after Sportsnet 960 was unceremoniously yanked off the air by Rogers, it appears good news is coming for would-be Calgary sports radio listeners.

Calgary Flames fans have had relatively few sports talk options to listen to since Sportsnet 960’s demise, but that may be about to change. Sportsnet’s Eric Francis is reporting that “exciting news” is about to be announced.

“Exciting news for Flames fans about to be announced regarding the Calgary sports radio landscape,” Francis said on social media.

We’ll see if Calgary follows the Edmonton model, which saw Sports 1440 and Edmonton Sports Talk sprout after Bell pulled the plug on TSN 1260 in 2023.

It’s also unclear where Flames games will be broadcast next season, as Rogers relinquished the broadcast rights entirely. The team could air games on another local radio station, or decide to move games in-house with a digital broadcast, as some U.S.-based NHL teams have done in recent years.

Changes to Flames broadcasts haven’t been limited to radio, as Kelly Hrudey was let go by Sportsnet. An analyst on Flames broadcasts last season, alongside Jon Abbott and Brendan Parker, Hrudey is reportedly being replaced by Kevin Sawyer. Sawyer is making the move from TSN, where he called Winnipeg Jets games.
