These 18 Calgary communities will have photo radar this December

The City of Calgary has announced the locations where photo radar will be in effect for the month of December.

The machines use radar to detect how fast a vehicle is going and trigger an attached camera to take a photo if the car is speeding, according to the City’s website. They’re often used in places where speeding is a problem or where traffic patterns make it unsafe for officers to catch speeders themselves.

“These cameras continue to reduce collisions and foster a safer driving environment at our intersections,” the Calgary Police Service said in a news release.

This December, photo radar will be used in the following neighbourhoods:

  • Acadia
  • Aspen Woods
  • Auburn Bay
  • Bridgeland/Riverside
  • Bridlewood
  • Cambrian Heights
  • Castleridge
  • Copperfield
  • Country Hills
  • Coventry Hills
  • Cranston
  • Discovery Ridge
  • Erin Woods
  • Falconridge
  • Haysboro
  • Haysboro Industrial
  • Mayland Heights
  • Palliser

In addition to photo radar machines, there are 58 intersection safety cameras throughout Calgary that capture cars running red lights.

“These drivers not only put themselves in danger, but they also endanger the lives of others,” the Calgary Police Service said.
