Here's what's open and closed in Calgary this August long weekend

The August long weekend is almost upon us, and some spots around Calgary will be making some minor adjustments to their services to reflect this.

Most City services will remain open; however, there are adjustments to operating hours in place. A reminder that Heritage Day is not a statutory holiday in Alberta, and if an employer recognizes an additional holiday, all employment standards rules related to holiday pay apply to these additional holidays.

Here’s what’s open and closed for the Heritage Day long weekend 2026.

Calgary Public Library

All branches of the public library will be closed on Heritage Day.

Leisure centres

Village Square Leisure Centre/Facebook

Leisure centres such as Village Square Leisure Centre and Southland Leisure Centre will be closed on Aug. 3, 2026.

Grocery and liquor stores

While grocery and liquor stores are considered essential services and are generally open across the city on holidays, they might be operating on adjusted hours. We advise checking your favourite location before you go, just to confirm.

Canada Post will be closed on Heritage Day. There will be no collection or delivery of mail on that day.

Movie theatres

Cineplex Entertainment, Landmark Cinemas, and Canyon Meadows Cinemas will be open on Aug. 3 for moviegoers who want to grab some popcorn, snacks, and a comfy theatre seat.

Transit

The City of Calgary will operate buses, CTrain, and On Demand on a Sunday level of service on Heritage Day.

Malls like Chinook Centre and Market Mall are open on Aug. 3 with adjusted hours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Southcentre Mall will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
