Construction underway on new $17M Calgary pedestrian bridge project
Construction is currently underway on a new Calgary pedestrian bridge designed to improve connections for Bridgeland-Riverside residents.
According to the City of Calgary, construction on the project began during the week of July 15, 2026, with Graham Construction mobilizing the site.
The project is broken into two phases, with the first phase including a new bridge connecting the north bank of the Bow River to St. Patrick’s Island.
The design of the new bridge is guided by four key principles: accessibility and safety, community connection, sustainability, and constructability.

The second phase, which currently doesn’t have a timeline, will replace the existing bridge over Memorial Drive.
The project aims to improve accessibility to Bridgeland-Riverside, the Bridgeland-Memorial LRT Station, St. Patrick’s Island, and nearby amenities, while creating a safer route for people walking, wheeling, and cycling, and strengthening the connection between the community and the Bow River.
The new bridge follows years of planning after the Bridgeland-Riverside Community Association requested studies for a new bridge connection in 2020. A feasibility study was later completed by Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC), leading to designs for the bridge.

The project is being funded by the Calgary General Hospital Legacy Fund, which has committed approximately $17 million toward the bridge.
