It wouldn’t be spring in Calgary without some wild weather, and the forecast is calling for plenty of snow soon before a big blast of heat arrives.
It’s no April Fools’ Day joke by Mother Nature. A snowfall warning was issued for Calgary and surrounding areas Tuesday afternoon, with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) calling for heavy snowfall tonight in parts of Alberta.
The federal weather agency stated that precipitation will begin as a rain/snow mix this afternoon before changing to heavy snow this evening. General amounts of 5 to 10 cm are expected, but in a few localities, upwards of 15 cm is possible, and snowfall amounts will be highly variable throughout the region.
The snow is set to end by tomorrow morning, and rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations.
“Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Take frequent breaks and avoid strain when clearing snow,” ECCC added.
Looking at the forecast for Calgary, this late-season snow threat won’t be sticking around for too long, with temperatures rising into the early 20°C range on Sunday and Monday. When you compare the overnight low YYC, which is set to see on Thursday and Monday’s daytime high, that’s a wild temperature difference of 33 degrees.

According to ECCC, the average high for Calgary around this time of year is 9°C, while the average low is -4°C. Looks like we will be WELL above the average high shortly!
While Calgary waits to be walloped by some spring snow, our pals up in Edmonton were on the receiving end of some major snowfall last week, with some areas seeing more than 30 centimetres fall.
