The 36th anniversary of the Calgary Folk Music Festival takes place July 23 – July 26 at Prince’s Island Park. This annual festival is a fantastic, family-friendly, cultural and musical celebration.
The Calgary Folk Music Festival showcases over 70 artists who hail from Calgary, around Alberta, throughout Canada and from around the world. This year’s lineup includes Calgary’s own Rueben and the Dark, who will be hitting the stage once every day for the 4 days.
Reuben and the Dark is comprised of five multi-instrumentalists and vocalists led by Reuben Bullock. The group’s debut album Funeral Sky features the tracks “Rolling Stone,” “Devil’s Time,” and even “Bow and Arrow,” which was used in Travel Alberta’s (remember to breathe) commercials.
There is no denying that this band has a knack for producing tracks with chilling, emotive, and introspective lyrics that explore the dichotomy of misery and joy. If you didn’t know about them before I definitely encourage you to give one of their songs a listen. Reuben and the Dark have already received some well deserved local recognition, but hopefully we will see them take their talents even further!
