Calgary Flames fans have a much different opinion than those within the organization regarding how the 2025-26 season is going.
From a results standpoint, the Flames have been nothing short of horrendous. They sit dead last in NHL standings in both wins (6) and points (15). They’re averaging just 2.27 goals per game, which is also 32nd.
This season wasn’t what management, coaching staff, or players expected after falling just one point shy of making the playoffs in 2024-25. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find fans who thought this team had the potential of finishing dead last in the standings.
Don’t get mistaken, however. A big chunk of the fan base is not upset with these struggles. Many are actually loving it.
Good! We want a top pick for once in franchise history

A major complaint from Flames fans over the years is that they are a team that is constantly in the middle. Never good enough to be a true Stanley Cup contender, and never bad enough to pick high in any given draft year. They’ve won just one Stanley Cup, and have never had a top-three pick on draft day.
That seems destined to change this coming draft, given how the first quarter of the 2025-26 season has played out. And boy, could they use it.
There are plenty of great prospects up front that the Flames would love to have. Gavin McKenna leads the way, but players like Ivar Stenberg, Ethan Belchetz, and Tynan Lawrence all figure to be difference makers at the NHL level. The thought of getting such a prospect is something that fans in Calgary are very eager about.

Helping add to the rapidly growing “tank” fan base is the fact that the Flames have played some elite young talent recently, including Connor Bedard and Macklin Celebrini, who were the first-overall selections in 2023 and 2024, respectively.
Though Celebrini was quiet, Bedard has put up seven points in two games against the Flames this season, including a hat trick in Tuesday’s 5-2 victory. Seeing what a massive impact the 20-year-old provides has had many in Calgary thinking the exact same thought.

An even better example of how badly many fans want the Flames to lose came on Wednesday night, where they were able to defeat the Buffalo Sabres by a 6-2 final. Rather than celebrate the win, many were upset by it.

Things can certainly change from a standings perspective from now until the end of the season, and winning the draft lottery is always far from certain. That said, at this point in time, the Flames are in a great spot to land their first-ever top-three pick, and those who have watched this season know just how bad they could use it.
