Calgary Flames receiving major trade interest in Nazem Kadri: report

Rasmus Andersson may not be the only Calgary Flames veteran shipped out ahead of the trade deadline this season.

The Flames’ 2-7-1 start to the season has put GM Craig Conroy in a spot where he may not be able to hold off on moving a number of veteran players out via trade in order to help improve the future of the franchise.

One such player who fans are well aware would bring in a great return is Nazem Kadri. The problem is that the 35-year-old carries a full no-movement clause on his contract, or at least, so we all thought.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported this past weekend that Kadri’s contract actually changed to a 13-team no-trade list beginning this season. That means that while he still has some control in regards to his future, the ball isn’t in his court as much as everybody had thought.

Now, according to Friedman, teams are lining up to learn whether or not they are on Kadri’s no-trade list.

“He’s got a 13-team no-trade now. His clause has changed,” Friedman said on the 32 Thoughts podcast. “I heard that teams are all over it. ‘Am I on that list, am I not on that list? I’m on that list? How did I end up on that list, and how do I change that?'”

Friedman went on to mention that while Kadri isn’t the type to give up on his current team, he’s a very prideful player who will want to show all 31 other teams across the NHL that he is still very much at the top of his game.

After what was a slow start to the season, Kadri has gotten back on track lately, scoring goals in each of his past two games to give him seven points through 10 outings. Slow starts to the season are nothing new for the star centre, which should give teams no concern when it comes to making a deal for him.

“That’s usually the way Naz goes. I remember a few years prior, I think he went 10 games to start the year without scoring one,” head coach Ryan Huska said on Sunday. “Then he gets hot and rolling. Typically, Naz, he gets on those streaks. The hope is that he’s going to stay on it now.”

Kadri, who had a team-leading 35 goals and 67 points in 2024-25, carries a $7 million cap hit, which won’t expire until the conclusion of the 2028-29 season.
