One of the most important pieces of the Calgary Flames roster will be sticking around long-term.

On Tuesday, the Flames announced that they’d signed goalie Dustin Wolf to a massive seven-year deal, worth $7.5 million per season.

Wolf had recently spoken of his fondness for Calgary in a recent podcast episode of 32 Thoughts with Sportsnet hosts Kyle Bukauskas and Elliotte Friedman.

“It’s a big city that has a small-town feel. Everyone kind of knows everyone. You cross paths with one person, then you know another. Next thing you know, you’re connected with other people in the city. And obviously, we have a new building coming in two summers here. It’s an exciting time,” he told the hosts.

When does Wolf’s deal with the Flames start?

The deal kicks in after this season for the 24-year-old American, who is coming off a stellar rookie campaign.

As per Flames GM Craig Conroy, the deal also includes a 10-team no-trade clause in the latter years of his extension.

He finished second in Calder Trophy voting for the NHL’s rookie of the year, after putting up a .910 save percentage and a 2.64 goals-against average in 53 games for the Flames.

He had been eligible to sign the new deal since July 1, but it appears that negotiations ramped up more seriously upon his return to Alberta this month.
