Matt Coronato’s breakout season for the Calgary Flames has helped make him a very wealthy individual.
After splitting the 2023-23 season between the NHL and AHL, Coronato made a big jump in his second year of professional hockey, scoring 24 goals and 47 points in 77 games for a Flames team that as a whole struggled to put the puck in the net. Hitting this offseason as a RFA, the question arose as to whether he’d be signed long term or to a shorter deal. On Saturday afternoon, we got our answer.

The two sides were able to put pen to paper on a lengthy seven-year, $45.5 million extension that will carry a cap hit of $6.5 million.
“Matt wants to be here long term, and that says a lot about him and where this is kind of going moving forward,” GM Craig Conroy said.
Coronato is one of the key pieces moving forward for this retooling Flames group, as the 22-year-old showed just how impactful he already is at such a young age. He has the makings of a regular 30-goal scorer at the NHL level, making the $6.5 million tag a more than reasonable deal from the Flames’ perspective.
With this deal out of the way, the Flames are now down to three remaining RFAs; Connor Zary, Adam Klapka, and Kevin Bahl. They also have several pending UFAs including Anthony Mantha, Justin Kirkland, Kevin Rooney, Joel Hanley, and Dan Vladar.
