There is no shortage of projections as we inch closer to the 2026 draft, though one of the newest lists will intrigue plenty of Calgary Flames fans.
The Flames are going to be a busy bunch at this year’s draft, as they own eight picks through the first three rounds. The pick everybody in Calgary is talking about is the sixth-overall selection, where they will be able to snatch up one of the best in this year’s class.
That’s far from the only excitement, however, as the Flames also have another late first-round selection, along with three picks in the second round.
Those picks have had some in Calgary suggest that the organization should look to draft Markus and Liam Ruck. The identical twins have been talked about plenty after combining for 212 points with the Medicine Hat Tigers this season.
Liam, who finished the season with 45 goals and 104 points, is projected to be the first of the two selected. In the latest mock draft rankings from Corey Pronman and Scott Mitchell of The Athletic, they have the Flames selecting Liam at No. 28 overall.
“Calgary steps up to take one half of the most dynamic duo in the CHL this season,” the column reads. “Liam is considered a half step above his brother and has high-end offence and a good motor, although so-so foot speed.”
Both Pronman and Mitchell have the Flames selecting Markus as well, though not as high as you may think. Despite leading the CHL with 108 points this season, they project he will fall to No. 51 overall, which would be the third and final second-round pick for GM Craig Conroy and his staff.
“The Flames make the Ruck twins’ dream come true and are happy to get Markus, the CHL’s leading scorer this year, late in the second round to boot. His skating needs to improve at his size, but the work ethic and playmaking are there.”
While not expected to be as dominant, the two are receiving comparisons to the Sedins, given how unusual it is for twins to be drafted, let alone in the early going. Fans would love to see them go to the same team, and if that is to happen, the Flames may have the best opportunity of all 32 organizations to do so.
