Calgary Flames prospect Cole Reschny earns major honour ahead of new season

The Calgary Flames appear to have a good one in Cole Reschny.

Everybody knows how talented the Macklin, Saskatchewan-born centreman is after being selected 18th overall by the Flames in 2025. He’s widely considered one of the top forward prospects in Calgary’s system and could even get a chance to play some NHL games late in the 2026-27 campaign.

Before that comes to fruition, Reschny has his sights set on leading the University of North Dakota to a Frozen Four championship.

The Fighting Hawks came close a season ago, bowing out with a semifinal loss to the University of Wisconsin.

After recording 35 points in 36 games as a freshman, Reschny is once again expected to have a major offensive role for North Dakota this season. That will be far from his only responsibility, however.

On Wednesday morning, North Dakota announced that Reschny will serve as its captain for the 2026-27 season. At just 19 years old, he has become the youngest player in program history to wear the ‘C’.

“Cole Reschny was voted by his teammates to be the youngest captain in UND hockey history for a good reason,” head coach Dane Jackson said. “His mature presence, relentless work ethic, and team-first approach embody our North Dakota culture.”

While Flames fans may not get to watch Reschny at the college level much this coming season, they will be able to see him on the world stage during the holidays.

Reschny, who scored four goals and five points at the 2026 World Juniors, is expected to return to Canada’s roster and play a significant role for the team.

Should the 2026-27 season go according to plan for Reschny, he could be in line to sign his entry-level contract in the spring. If that happens, he could get an opportunity to make his NHL debut late in the season.
