The Calgary Flames have struggled as a collective group to score goals this season, making Blake Coleman somewhat of an outlier.
Coleman has been arguably the Flames’ best player through nearly the first quarter of the 2025-26 season, entering Thursday’s outing against the San Jose Sharks with a team-high six goals.
He was able to add to that total, scoring what wound up being the game-winner partway through the second period in a 2-0 victory.

“Blake’s consistent. That would probably be the one thing I’d say about him,” head coach Ryan Huska said. “He goes to the net. He doesn’t always score the prettiest goals, but he’s a worker. He’s the type of guy that makes people around him better.
“With his offensive ability, it’s not like his hands are outstanding or anything like that. He’s very good at understanding where to go and where the puck is going to be. His hockey sense allows him to be in the right spot at the right time. Tonight he did a good job of poking [the puck] away and finding a way to score.”
In net, Dustin Wolf was able to pick up the first shutout of the season and fourth of his career. He hasn’t been given a ton of run support in 2025-26, which made him all the more thankful for Coleman’s big performance.
“He just has a way with his stick,” Wolf said. “He collects passes with one hand halfway down his shaft, creates plays in the corner, gets to the net front. He said he knew what he wanted to do on that goal, and he put it right under the bar.”
Never one to hype himself up, Coleman had a good chuckle when hearing about Wolf’s comment.
“We’ve been working on that one a little bit in warmup,” said a grinning Coleman. “But ya, kind of had an idea of what I wanted to do. [Yaroslav Askarov] came out with a pretty aggressive pokecheck, so I just had to beat that.”
"I thought, to a man, everyone did their job."

Despite currently being on pace for 30 goals this season, Coleman instead wanted to focus on what was an all-around great effort from the entire group.
“I thought it was a good 60. I thought the buy-in was really high. I thought to a man, everyone did their job. The first 40 in particular, I thought we were pretty smothering and could’ve had a bigger lead going into that third period.”
Thursday’s win put an end to what was a three-game skid for the Flames. They’ll hope to keep things rolling in the right direction on Saturday when they welcome the Winnipeg Jets to town.
