You can’t help but love this Calgary Flames team.
There were almost zero expectations for this group entering the 2024-25 season, as they appeared set to enter a rebuilding period. Instead, they remained in the playoff hunt right until the end, being eliminated in the final days of the regular season.
It was a bit of an odd night, as the Flames actually took care of business by defeating the Vegas Golden Knights by a 5-4 shootout final. It didn’t matter in the end, however, as the St. Louis Blues and Minnesota Wild had already won their respective outings, putting the final nail in the Flames’ coffin.
Despite fans already knowing the Flames’ season was finished, they continued to cheer loudly throughout the final portion of the game, and after the shootout had commenced, stayed in the building to give this resilient group a well-deserved standing ovation in what was their final home game of the season.

Several players said afterward how appreciative they were of the classy gesture from the fans in attendance, and did their best to return the favour afterwards. Following the game, Sportsnet’s Meaghan Mikkelson tweeted a photo that showed Dustin Wolf meeting up with fans in the parking lot to take pictures and sign autographs.
After a heartbreaking elimination from the @NHL playoffs, hereās Dustin Wolf post-game. He and MULTIPLE other players stopped and got out of their cars to sign autographs and take photos with fans.

This is a great indicator of why this Flames team was so beloved this season. Not only did they put on a great performance through 81 games thanks to their relentless work ethic, but they truly embraced the city and its fan base throughout. Though not making the playoffs is a disappointment, there is plenty to look forward to in the years to come.
