Calgary Flames fans are being irked by the city of Edmonton once again, though this time it has nothing to do with the Oilers.
After plenty of anticipation, it was confirmed on Monday that the 2028 World Cup of Hockey will be coming to Alberta. Bringing best-on-best hockey to Alberta has many residents in the area full of excitement, though some in Calgary feel they may have gotten the short end of the stick.
The reason Calgary was considered such a frontrunner to host this event was that its new building, Scotia Place, is set to open in the fall of 2027. The NHL recognized that and gave the city its wish. Edmonton, however, still came out on top.
Scotia Place, as well as Prague’s O2 Arena, are set to host the round-robin games of the tournament. Edmonton’s Rogers Place will host both the semifinal and final. Rogers Place will be over a decade old by that time, resulting in many Calgarians questioning why their city didn’t get the final matchups.
We do not need Edmonton to host any World Cup games 😠

“You’re showing off the city of Edmonton over the city of Calgary for your finals,” former NHLer and Barnburner co-host Rhett Warrener said. “Great thinking, Gary.”
While there are some in Calgary who are thrilled to have any form of best-on-best hockey coming to the city, there were others who also felt slighted.
“Absolutely a joke,” one fan wrote on X. “Unreal! Not buying any tickets! Always Edmonton! This [is] BS.”
Edmonton fans also joined in on the conversation, and, as you would expect, they have a much different outlook on the situation.
“You have a small market NHL team,” one user wrote. “We have a top 10 sports franchise in the world. Whatever delusion you’d like to entertain is up to you guys. But no one with half a brain is putting a finale in Calgary over Edmonton.”
And, helping prove just how great the rivalry between Alberta’s teams is, plenty of Oilers fans took this as an opportunity to poke fun at the Flames.

While you can understand those in Calgary being somewhat frustrated over this development, there should still be plenty of excitement over this event. Assuming all goes well, it could also lead to Scotia Place hosting further major NHL events down the road.
