Calgary Flames make draft day trade with Detroit Red Wings

The Calgary Flames have been a busy team at the 2025 NHL Draft, and decided to get even busier this afternoon.

The Flames were able to add another 2025 draft pick today, as they made a trade with the Detroit Red Wings. The deal saw them acquire the 211th overall selection, while they will send the Red Wings a seventh-round pick in 2026.

With the pick, the Flames selected winger Yan Matveiko from CSKA in Russia. The 18-year-old centreman stands at 6-foot-1, 150 pounds, and is a left-hand shot. Playing in the MHL for Krasnaya Armiya Moskva this past season, he had 10 goals and 24 points in 42 games. He was also able to add a goal and three helpers in six playoff contests.

This marked the sixth pick of the day for the Flames, who were also able to select centre Theo Stockselius (54th overall), defenceman Maceo Phillips (80th overall), winger Ethan Wyttenbach (144th overall), winger Aidan Lane (176th overall), and defenceman Jakob Leander (208th overall).

It was clear that in the early going of this draft, the Flames put a clear emphasis on drafting centres. They picked up two in the first round yesterday, selecting Cole Reschny at 18th overall followed up by Cullen Potter at 32nd overall.

While all these players will need time, perhaps several seasons, before being ready to make an impact at the NHL level, Craig Conroy’s drafting since taking over as GM should give fans confidence that at least a few of these players listed above will turn out.
