The Calgary Flames may not be making any more roster moves before the season but are looking to add to their hockey operations department.

If you’ve ever thought about working for a professional sports team, now may be your chance, as the Flames recently announced that they are looking to hire a hockey analytics specialist.

“The Calgary Flames are seeking a talented and versatile individual to join our growing Analytics team within Hockey Operations,” an excerpt of the position reads. “In this role you will help to design, build and maintain software that supports users throughout the organization and impacts areas such as coaching, player evaluation, scouting, and player development. You will also contribute to research initiatives with the objective of increasing our knowledge of the game of hockey.”

The main roles of this job include maintenance and optimization of the Flames’ proprietary hockey operations platform, designing and developing new user-friendly tools, contributing to initiatives supporting player and team performance analysis, and assisting in the design and implementation of data pipelines.

There are plenty of qualifications the Flames are looking for in the right applicant, including a bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science, information systems, or a related field. They are also seeking an individual who has spent three or more years in hockey analytics and/or professional software development.

This opportunity was listed this past Friday and will remain open until a suitable candidate is found. The salary range for the position is $80,000 to $90,000.

The Flames, like many NHL organizations, are clearly beginning to put a bigger emphasis on analytics going forward. Their current analytics team consists of Hendrix Hanes (director of analytics and data), Alex Robson (director of engineering), Connor Rankin (senior video analyst/reserve list scout), and Etienne Rouleau (data analyst).
