The Calgary Flames are making a front office addition on Monday.
Today, the Flames announced that they’d hired Peter Hanlon as an assistant general manager, although he won’t exactly have too much of a commute adjustment from his old office.
Hanlon has worked with the Flames in the media relations department since 1997, and is making the move to hockey operations for the first time.
“Peter has worked in professional hockey for over 30 years,” said Flames president of hockey operations Don Maloney in a release. “His knowledge and experience are a welcomed addition to our staff.”

Hanlon began his career in the AHL with the St. John’s Maple Leafs — a now-defunct affiliate of the parent NHL club in Toronto — in 1992 before making the move to Alberta five years later.
“Peter will be involved in all areas of hockey operations, including player evaluation, player recruitment and strategic planning,” added general manager Craig Conroy. “Together with assistant general managers Dave Nonis and Brad Pascall, Peter will help us pursue our goal of bringing the Stanley Cup back to Calgary.”
Many of Hanlon’s sports media colleagues were quick to praise him upon seeing the news.
“Good things happening to good people, especially to someone who has put in their dues and then some,” former Sportsnet reporter Arash Madani wrote on X. “Congrats to Peter, as good as they come in this wild business of pro sports.”
“Will miss Peter on the PR side, but a well-deserved opportunity for a class act, exciting stuff,” DailyFaceoff’s Matt Larkin shared.
