Calgary Flames' future home takes shape as Scotia Place reaches major milestone

Construction on the Calgary Flames’ new arena is just past the halfway point and is continuing to progress at a rapid rate.

Shovels hit the dirt to begin building Scotia Place back in July of 2024. For a lengthy period, it was nothing more than a hole in the ground. Those who have driven past the site recently have now gotten a pretty good idea of what the outside of the building will look like.

As per Jordan Kanygin of CTV News, roughly 40 per cent of the $926 million budget has been spent thus far.

“We’ve got to try and get it water-tight as quickly as we can. We should be there by August or September,” said Bob Hunter, a member of the project committee with the City of Calgary. “We’re already on the event level where the team spaces are. We’re doing drywall, and we’re starting to do some finishing. Plumbing is going in.”

There are expected to be roughly 800 construction members on site every day throughout the summer, with that number increasing to roughly 1,300 later in the year. The building is expected to be ready to rock ahead of the 2027-28 NHL season.

Once completed, Scotia Place is expected to have a capacity of 18,400. It will also feature a community arena, a 450-stall parkade, and several public plazas.

Calgarians are already seeing the benefits the new arena can provide. Earlier this year, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman announced that the 2028 World Cup of Hockey will be hosted in both Calgary and Edmonton, as well as Prague.

“It’s going to put us more on the world map than we are already in terms of major sporting events, as well as tourism and convention opportunities,” Calgary mayor Jeromy Farkas told reporters on Tuesday.

Though there is still plenty of work to be done, those working in and around the site don’t seem to have any concerns regarding potential delays. Should that continue to be the case, it will mean that the upcoming 2026-27 season will be the last the Flames play at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
