There is a lot riding on this season for several Calgary Flames players as they look to secure their next NHL contracts.
The Flames currently have 10 players on their active roster who are in the final season of their respective contracts. Some are looking to cash in with a nice raise, while a few are simply hoping to earn another NHL deal.
Here’s a look at every expiring deal the Flames have on the books, starting with the unrestricted free agents…
UFAs
Ryan Strome
- Age: 33
- Cap hit: $5 million
- 2026-27 stats: 15 GP, 3 G, 3 A, 6 PTS
Ryan Strome has fit in well with the Flames since being acquired during last season’s trade deadline. He’s never going to be a player who lights up the scoresheet, but has already proven to be an extremely valuable leader for the younger players on this roster.
There’s been talk about a potential short-term extension with Strome. It makes sense to do so, as he’s been a welcome addition, and the Flames don’t have much centre depth. Any new contract, however, would see him command far less than the $5 million he’s earning right now.
Morgan Frost
- Age: 27
- Cap hit: $4.375 million
- 2026-27 stats: 15 GP, 4 G, 5 A, 9 PTS
The pending free agent who has generated the most discussion on this Flames team is Morgan Frost. The organization reportedly has a desire to re-sign him, though a weak free-agent class this coming offseason could result in him commanding more money than general manager Craig Conroy is comfortable giving him.

The Frost situation is one that fans will want to keep monitoring as the season progresses. If the two sides can’t agree to an extension, the 27-year-old will likely be traded.
Maxim Tsyplakov
- Age: 28
- Cap hit: $2.25 million
- 2026-27 stats: 8 GP, 0 G, 1 A, 1 PT
Everybody knew that Maxim Tsyplakov was nothing more than a throw-in in the Simon Nemec trade with the New Jersey Devils this offseason. Unfortunately, that’s becoming more and more apparent each time the 28-year-old hits the ice.
Tsyplakov has struggled mightily with the Flames despite being given limited fourth-line minutes when in the lineup. One has to wonder if he winds up getting placed on waivers once this team is fully healthy.
Joel Hanley
- Age: 35
- Cap hit: $1.75 million
- 2026-27 stats: 1 GP, 0 G, 0 A, 0 PTS
It feels like we are all witnessing the end of an NHL career when it comes to Joel Hanley. The 35-year-old has been a good soldier on the back end over the past few seasons, but is nearing the end of the road.

Hanley, who the Flames kept on the roster as a depth option, has suited up for just one game this season. The lack of opportunity likely won’t change for the better in the near future, which seems to suggest his current contract may be the last NHL deal of his career.

Adam Klapka
- Age: 26
- Cap hit: $1.25 million
- 2026-27 stats: 15 GP, 3 G, 3 A, 6 PTS
Once viewed as a major project, Adam Klapka has really settled in nicely this season on the Flames’ fourth line. Whether it’s dropping the mitts, throwing a big hit, or scoring a big goal, the 6-foot-8 winger has had a positive impact.
Klapka will never be a star in the NHL, but is proving he can be an everyday player. Should that consistency continue for the remainder of the season, he can expect a significant raise from his current $1.25 million salary.
Brennan Othmann
- Age: 23
- Cap hit: $975,000
- 2026-27 stats: 6 GP, 0 G, 0 A, 0 PTS
Brennan Othmann is still trying to find his way as an NHLer. The 16th overall pick from the 2021 draft has dressed in just six games for the Flames this season, more often being forced to watch as a healthy scratch.

Whether Othmann does have a versatile enough game to develop into an everyday NHLer remains to be seen. That said, his draft pedigree and age give the Flames plenty of reasons to re-sign him to a cheap, short-term deal.
Aydar Suniev
- Age: 21
- Cap hit: $923,333
- 2026-27 stats: 12 GP, 4 G, 1 A, 5 PTS
Aydar Suniev has been one of the better Flames stories early on this season. He was recalled from the Wranglers in the early going, and has since provided some strong depth scoring with four goals through 12 games.
Suniev still has a ways to go in his development, but what he’s already showing at the age of 21 gives Flames fans plenty to be excited about going forward. This most recent stretch of play should also help him in terms of earning more money on his next deal.
William Stromgren
- Age: 23
- Cap hit: $850,000
- 2026-27 stats: 1 GP, 1 G, 0 A, 1 PT
The Flames recalled William Stromgren late last week, and he responded by scoring his first NHL goal on Monday night. It was a positive sign for a player whose stock had fallen dramatically from an organizational standpoint.
While the jury is still out on whether or not Stromgren is an NHL player, signs still point toward him earning an extension next offseason for a similar dollar figure to what he’s commanding now.
Yan Kuznetsov
- Age: 24
- Cap hit: $812,500
- 2026-27 stats: 14 GP, 0 G, 2 A, 2 PTS
After bursting out of the gates as a rookie in 2025-26, Yan Kuznetsov has had somewhat of a slower start to the 2026-27 campaign. That’s been apparent by his usage in the early going, as he’s averaging nearly three minutes fewer per game than he did a season ago.

Regardless of some struggles in his sophomore campaign, Kuznetsov has become a reliable player on the back end for the Flames, and will be compensated accordingly. AFP Analytics currently projects him to sign a two-year extension with an average annual value of roughly $2.6 million.
Arsenii Sergeev
- Age: 23
- Cap hit: $903,750
- 2026-27 stats: 1 GP, 5.00 GAA, 853 SV%
Arsenii Sergeev’s stats shown above aren’t a fair reflection of his play. Instead, he happened to make his first start of the NHL season in the second half of a back-to-back against the Colorado Avalanche. Not the easiest of tasks.
Sergeev is currently up with the Flames due to Devin Cooley’s injury. Once Cooley returns, he will carry on as the Wranglers’ starter as he looks to prove he has what it takes to become a regular NHL goalie.
