Several Calgary Flames fans stopped by the Saddledome to pay their respects to Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau.

It’s hard to believe that it has already been one year since the tragic passing of the brothers, who were allegedly struck by a suspected drunk driver while on their bikes in New Jersey, just one night before their sister was supposed to get married.

The hockey community was in complete shock upon hearing the news, but quickly rallied to show their support to the entire Gaudreau family. That was certainly the case in Calgary, a city Johnny called home for nine seasons as a member of the Flames.

The Flames organization and its fanbase had several initiatives to help keep the memories of Johnny and Matthew alive, and today, on the one-year anniversary of their tragic passing, several fans went to the Saddledome to pay their respects.

Fans brought purple Gatorade and Skittles, both favourites of Johnny’s, to place in front of the Saddledome. There were also a few who brought flowers down and also laid them on the steps in front of the Flames arena.

Meanwhile, the Flames organization announced that it donated $34,000 to The John and Matthew Gaudreau Foundation.

“You’re always in our hearts, Johnny and Matthew,” the Flames said on social media. “Today, and every day, we remember and celebrate your lives and the impact you had on everyone you met. We miss you. The Flames Foundation is supporting the work of The John and Matthew Gaudreau Foundation with a $34,000 charitable donation.”

Fans wishing to donate to the foundation can do so online.
