Calgary Flames convert English-born Canadian soccer player into new fan

The Calgary Flames appear to have a new fan on their hands.

Alfie Jones, the English-born professional soccer player, recently said that the Flames have become his favourite NHL team. The interview came just shortly after he and his Canadian men’s teammates picked up a 2-0 win over Venezuela in an international match on Tuesday night.

The outing, which was played at Chase Field in Fort Lauderdale, put an end to a three-game skid for Canada. Making the game all the more fun for everyone in attendance was that hockey icon Wayne Gretzky was in attendance to watch, and even gave the Canadians a pre-game pep talk.

Despite being in the presence of Gretzky, however, Jones admitted after the match that he chose to become a Flames fan after the organization recently sent him a message on Instagram.

“I got the Flames. They sent me a message on Instagram,” Jones said. “I think I’ve got a jersey coming my way, which I’m looking forward to.”

Despite rooting for a team that Gretzky would have considered perhaps his biggest rival, Jones was extremely appreciative to meet the Great One.

“It was amazing. Somebody like that, he’s an idol to so many people,” Jones said. “To see him supporting us was a massive boost. We can learn a lot from him and his history. It was great to see him here.”

It’s been an interesting month for Jones, who has been suiting up for Canada despite only recently visiting the country for the first time. His eligibility comes from the fact that his grandmother was born in Alberta.

Due to immigration issues, Jones was not able to suit up with Canada versus Ecuador last Thursday, but had everything sorted in order to compete versus Venezuela.

With everything all sorted out, Jones will now have a shot at suiting up for Canada in next year’s FIFA World Cup. That would allow him to spend more time in the country he’s currently representing, as all three of the country’s group stages will be played on home soil.
