If the Calgary Flames score four or more goals in a game, there’s a pretty good chance they’re walking away with a win.
That was the case again Monday night, when the Flames cruised to a 5-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs to extend their winning streak in such games. In fact, they’ve won all three contests in which they’ve scored at least four goals this season.
And as die-hard Flames fans know, this is nothing new.
The streak dates back to Dec. 13, 2023, when Calgary defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2. Since then, the Flames have won 60 consecutive games in which they’ve scored at least four times, putting them within striking distance of an all-time NHL record.
Entering Monday’s matchup, Calgary was tied with the Detroit Red Wings (1952-1955) and Pittsburgh Penguins (2016-2017) for third place on the all-time list, with 59 straight victories. The win over Toronto moved the Flames into sole possession of third place.
They’re now just one win away from matching the Boston Bruins for second, who won 61 consecutive games when scoring four or more goals between 1927 and 1931.
The record is also within reach. The New York Rangers hold the mark with 65 straight wins in such games, a streak that ran from 2011 to 2014.
As impressive as the run has been, there’s one major catch: The Flames haven’t exactly been lighting up the scoreboard on a regular basis.
Despite their recent turnaround, Calgary ranks 28th in the NHL this season with anĀ average of just 2.55 goals per game. That’s nearly identical to last season, when the Flames finished dead last in the league with an average of 2.54 goals.
The Flames’ scoring struggles make their streak all the more remarkable, but they’ll need to find the back of the net more often if they want to keep climbing the list. With the Bruins’ mark just one win away, Calgary has a chance to make even more history the next time they reach the four-goal mark.
