Gary Bettman loves what he’s seeing of the soon-to-be home of the Calgary Flames.
The NHL commissioner, Gary Bettman, was in Calgary on Tuesday, not only to discuss both Calgary and Edmonton as potential hosts of the 2028 World Cup of Hockey but also to see Scotia Place firsthand.
Though the building has a ways to go before being complete, construction crews have been putting the new arena up at a rapid pace. Those who have driven by as of late will have noticed that plenty of the building is well above ground.
“It looks like it’s going to be a spectacular, first-class, state-of-the-art arena, and I’m excited about it, and Flames fans will be excited about it when they have a chance to experience it,” Bettman said. “It’s going to be great for the City of Calgary to have this type of facility, which, in addition to hosting the Flames, will be able to host concerts and other events that don’t currently come to Calgary.
“I don’t think there will be a nicer building anywhere.”
Bettman also explained that the arena is even further along than it appears from the outside, which makes sense given the latest updates provided.
Along with the indoor plaza structure beginning to take place, construction crews have also begun putting together the Flames’ dressing room, along with therapy, treatment, and team spaces.

“With interior systems moving quickly, these spaces are on their way to becoming vibrant restaurants, premium lounges, and unforgettable game-day experiences,” an update provided by Scotia Place on Monday reads.

“What’s clear to me was that a lot of homework was done studying [other] new buildings, to the extent that anybody did something that they wished they would’ve done differently, they’ve taken that into account.”
Construction on the new facility began in the summer of 2024, with the goal of having it completed and ready to rock for the 2027-28 season. Based on updates provided from the official Instagram account of Scotia Place, along with Bettman’s comments, it is suggested that they are well in line to hit their target date.
