The Search for Life Beyond Earth with astrobiologist Kevin Hand

What: Astrobiologist and Emerging Explorer Kevin Hand works with NASA to search for life beyond Earth. His mantra is, “follow the water,” has led to him investigate Europa, Jupiter’s fourth largest moon. Although his focus is a world millions of miles away, Hand also explores the extremes of Earth, like the north slope of Alaska and the glaciers of Mount Kilimanjaro, to see how microbes survive in harsh climates.

Canadian Justice, Indigenous Injustice with Kent Roach

What: Join Kent Roach, Professor and Prichard Wilson Chair in Law and Public Policy at the University of Toronto, for a discussion of the Gerald Stanley and Colten Boushie case. Kent will provide valuable insight into criminal justice, racism, and the treatment of Indigenous peoples in Canada.

Mixed Media Monday + Bonus Background

What: Join Julia and Nicole at The Paper And Ink Boutique on the last Monday of every month for Mixed Media Monday. In each session, attendees will learn to create an art journal page using a variety of mixed media techniques and products. Nicole and Julia will also show attendees how to use these same products and techniques to create a scrapbook page background, cards or tags.

What: Calgary’s Official Poetry Slam and Open Mic. Slam poetry is a type of competition where people read their poems without props, costumes, or music. The sign-up sheet for both the open mic and the slam will be released at 7:00 pm, and the show will start at 7:30 pm.

7th Annual Crowchild Classic

What: University of Calgary Dinos and Mount Royal Cougar Athletics take over the Scotiabank Saddledome for the seventh annual Crowchild Classic. The annual celebration of university sport in Calgary is the largest gathering of students in the city each year and will once again feature a hockey doubleheader, with the women’s game set for 4 pm with the men to follow at 6:45 p.m.

The Robber Bridegroom by the Brothers Grimm 

What: Jupiter Theatre and Chimera Theatre bring new life to this classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale through puppetry and physical theatre in this dark adaptation that explores intuition and the uncertain nature of humanity. The Robber Bridegroom tells the tale of an impoverished miller who seeks a better life for his only daughter. To save the mill, they arrange for her marriage to a wealthy man from out of town. She wants to help her family and do what is right, but something wicked lurks in the woods where the bridegroom lives.

Movies That Matter

What: Movies That Matter is a monthly series of documentary film premieres at the University of Calgary, co-presented by the University of Calgary Film Society and the Department of Communication and Culture. The series strives to be timely and provocative, allowing viewers to delve into some important issues relevant in our society today. Each screening will include a post-screening discussion, featuring the director of the film itself and/or someone from the community at large known for their expertise or insightful views on the film subject.
