11 Calgary craft markets to check out this fall

Fall is an inspiring season: it’s the perfect season for artists, designers and artisans to get creative with fall colours, tastes, smells (yes, smells) and textures.

Getting to experience the handmade and locally crafted is a rare feat especially with most craft sales only occurring for a day or two, that’s why we decided to create a list of Calgary’s fall craft markets to help you plan out your shopping, whether it be for yourself or a gift for someone else.

Mad About Art

  • What: Located in the Edgemont Community Centre, Mad About Art hosts a display of paintings painted by artists who are members of the Federation of Canadian Artists.
  • Where: 33 Edge Valley Circle NW, Calgary
  • When: October 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Cost: Free; donations for the Food Bank are accepted

The Alberta Dames Modern Vintage Market October 2015

  • What: With 6,000 sqft to work with in the Calgary Woman’s Show this Vintage Market is a fun spot to visit. There will be 32 vendors selling clothing, decor, jewelry, handbags and more.The first 2,500 people through the door of show will receive a swag bag.
  • Where: BMO Stampede Park – 20 Roundup Way SW, Calgary
  • When: Saturday, October 24 and 25 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Cost: $14

Calyx 30th Semi-Annual Art Exhibition and Sale

  • What: This two-day event features different artists each day. Showcasing beautiful pieces of art crafted from a diverse spectrum of disciplines by artists like Brenda Banda Johnson, Wendy Alger and John Beamish. Upon arrival you can also be entered into a free draw.
  • When: Saturday, October 24 and 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Where: Crescent Heights Community Centre – 1101 2nd Street NW, Calgary
  • Cost: Free; free parking

Calgary New Age Market: Booganza

  • What: Adults can enjoy a variety of vendors and the children can enjoy a variety of treats at this Halloween market. If you want to stay up later you can also buy tickets for the Pumpkin King Bash which is an 18 plus event that goes from 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. hosted by Calgary New Age Market with music by DJ Pengwen.
  • Where: Calgary New Age Market – 1320 5 Abe NW, Calgary
  • When: Saturday, October 31 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Cost: Free

Greek Annual Bazaar

  • What: The Greek Ladies of Philoptochos, a non-profit charitable organization, will once again host their Annual Greek Bazaar this November. Attendees to the event can expect to find a range of homemade authentic Greek food, desserts, arts, crafts and family entertainment.
  • When: Friday, November 6 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, November 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Where: St. Demetrios Orthodox Community Hall – 1 Tamarac Cr SW, Calgary
  • Cost: $2 admission

Fort Calgary’s annual Artisan’s Fair

  • What: Returning for its 13th year, Fort Calgary Artisan’s Fair will feature a variety of vendors exhibiting and selling all manner of crafts including jewellery, paintings, books, cards, glasswork, woodwork, knitting, crocheting, toys, ornaments, and whole lot more.
  • Where: Fort Calgary – 750 9th Avenue SE, Calgary
  • When: Friday, November 11 from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Cost: Free admission with a donation of a non-perishable food item to the Veteran’s Food Bank

The Group Art Society’s Fall Show and Sale

  • What: Enjoy beautiful pieces of original art at this showcase and sale. The art pieces come in many sizes as well as styles and you will get a chance to meet some of the artists too.
  • Where: St Peter’s Anglican Church – 903 75 Ave SW, Calgary
  • When: Saturday, November 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Cost: Free refreshments, admission, and parking; donations for the Calgary Food Bank are accepted.

Mount Pleasent Potters’ Guild’s Fall/Winter Potter Sale

  • What: The Mount Pleasant Potters’ Guild is a non-profit organization that supports local ceramic artists. So Bring your friends and family to explore this semi-annual event full of various types of pottery from cups to vases.
  • Where: Triwood Community Hall – 2244 Chicoutimi Drive NW, Calgary
  • When: Sunday, November 15
  • Cost: Free

ACAD’s Show and Sale Weekend Market

  • What: This semi-annual retail event showcases student work from several ACAD programs such as painting, drawing, ceramic, fibre, printmaking, jewellery, etc. Proceeds support the students.
  • Where: ACAD Main Mall – 1407, 14th Avenue NW, Calgary
  • When:  Friday, November 27 from noon to 7 p.m. and Saturday, November 28 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Cost: Donation

Festival of Crafts

  • What: Known as one of Canada’s largest holiday handcrafted shopping events, Festival of Crafts runs four days showcasing items from fashion to gourmet treats from over 250 talented artisans, artists and designers.
  • Where: BMO Centre at Stampede Park – 20 Roundup Way SW, Calgary
  • When: November 26 to 29; Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Cost: $7 for adults, $5 for youths aged 13 to 17 and seniors, and free for children under 12

Wildflower Arts Centre’s Salon and Sale

  • What: Meet the talented people behind the art centre and see first hand what they have created. The show consists of many different art pieces providing a good variety for you to choose from.
  • Where: Wildflower Arts Centre – 3363 Spruce Dr SW, Calgary
  • When: December 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Cost: Free
