Huge rink and concert lawn eyed in concept plan for revamped Confluence site

The Confluence Historic Site and Parkland in Calgary has just unveiled a long-term concept plan that will guide the site’s transformation over the next 20 years.
The 42-acre site, located where the Bow and Elbow rivers meet downtown, is being reimagined with expanded pathways, gardens, and new structures designed to attract more visitors.

It’s set to get some pretty nice new amenities, such as a powwow arbour, which will feature a circular structure with capacity for 2,500 spectators and year-round access.
The site will also see an update to its concert scene with a new covered stage with seating for 3,000 to 5,000 people, plus capacity for an additional 13,000 people in the concert lawn, as well as an Olympic-sized hockey rink.

“With a strategy that aligns with our needs, community input, and plans for the surrounding neighbourhoods, we will ensure that all future developments on the site will benefit the public good.”

The concept was developed by O2 Planning & Design in collaboration with Hatlie Group and Reimagine Architect, and went through community engagement that included Indigenous community members, connected organizations, site visitors and Calgarians across the city.
The Confluence Historic Site and Parkland says that while the site concept plan is not a finalized design, it is a long-term vision for the future layout of the site.
There is no information on when the site will begin construction or costs, but over the coming months, The Confluence plans to work to establish a phasing plan and high-level budget information.
