It isn’t often you have players of Thomas Müller’s calibre hit the pitch in Calgary.
That is exactly what happened on Monday night, however, as Müller and the Vancouver Whitecaps took ATCO Field versus Cavalry FC.
To no surprise, Calgarians showed up in full force, with a recorded attendance of 6,012 fans packed in the stands to witness one of the all-time greats.
“It was an honour to play against someone like Thomas Müller, but he’s also a great character,” Cavalry head coach and GM Tommy Wheeldon Jr. said. “So to see all the fans here, whether they were here to support us or whether to see him, fair play to the Whitecaps for bringing him in because he’s helping spread the game in Canada.”

The Whitecaps didn’t have to play Müller, let alone bring him to Calgary on Monday. Up 4-1 going into the second half of the home-and-home series, it was pretty clear the Whitecaps were going to be okay whether he played or not.
Credit to the Cavalry, however, who walked away with a 1-1 draw in what Wheeldon referred to as “one of our best performances I think I’ve seen at Spruce Meadows.”

Müller, 36, is in his second season with the Whitecaps after being signed last August. In 12 matches this season, he has scored four goals along with two assists.
As for the Cavalry, despite being eliminated from the Canadian Championship, their season continues. They currently have a record of 8-1-2 through 11 matches, and will look to improve upon that this Saturday in an outing at ATCO Field versus the Halifax Wanderers.
