A major transformation of a downtown Calgary street is entering a new phase this month, with construction moving ahead on the 8th Street SW revitalization project.

In a July 30 update from the City of Calgary, officials shared that construction at the 10th Avenue SW intersection along the corridor is expected to begin in early August and continue through September.

Beginning in August, Calgarians can also expect to see permanent curbside lane closures along 8th Street SW between 4th and 12th Avenue SW as part of the street’s redesign.

The City says the space from the removed curbside lanes will be used to improve the pedestrian experience, with more room for walking and connection along the corridor.

Construction on the project began back in May 2025, and it is expected to continue until early 2027.

Some key points of the 8th Street SW redesign include upgrades to aging infrastructure, protected walking and wheeling paths, improved road conditions, inviting gathering spaces, and enhanced landscaping.

The projected investment for the revitalization is $30 million, with $20.5 million coming from the Government of Canada through the Canada Community-Building Fund, and the remaining funding provided through the City’s capital reserves.

Once complete, the project is set to transform 8th Street SW between 2nd Avenue SW and 17th Avenue SW, adding upgraded sidewalks, protected pathways, landscaping, and new public spaces designed to make the street more welcoming for pedestrians, cyclists, and visitors.

The revitalization project spans approximately 1.5 kilometres and is one part of the City’s broader efforts to encourage more activity in the downtown area. The corridor was identified as an important connection between the Beltline and downtown, linking 17th Avenue SW with the Bow River pathway system.
