Calgarians enjoying drop in gas prices

For the first time in a while gas prices in Calgary have plummeted below 80 cents per litre in some parts of Calgary.

As of Thursday, January 14, the average price of gas in Calgary was 81.8 and the lowest price was 73.9 cents per litre, according to GasBuddy.com.

The lowest regular gas prices in Calgary are currently at certain Costco, and Gas Plus locations at 73.9 cents per litre. The highest can be found at certain Husky and Petro-Canada locations at 86.9 cents per litre.

According to Dan McTeague of gasbuddy.com, the current dropping prices in Calgary are due to world prices for refined gasoline.

“Actually in Chicago that dropped dramatically in the last couple weeks,” says McTeague. ” Just a few weeks a go I was looking at prices and it was $1.35 per gallon, it’s now dropped to, if I look today, as low as 89-90 cents.”

“Even though the Canadian dollar, which is important, has dropped it hasn’t dropped as much, so we are getting a break.”

McTeague describes the dropping gas prices as a “welcome change from what we’ve seen from last February till about a week ago.”

Gas prices may continue dropping, but it is still to early to tell says McTeague.

“There is a tendency to think that we haven’t hit bottom yet, January is usually a pretty easy month so that’s not extraordinary, but we could see [prices drop] 3 or 4 cents more.”
