Boardgames and brews, that’s what visiting patrons can expect to discover when they drop by the soon-to-open Boxcar Cafe.
Slated to open in February 2016, Boxcar Cafe, takes the place of Margarita’s House in Victoria Park’s Radio Block heritage building, and once open will boast more than 300 board games (ranging from easy and fun party games to strategy games), beers on tap from Village Brewery and Wildrose Brewery, and a variety of espresso-based drinks made using beans from Calgary’s own Phil & Sebastian.

Working with RAD Architecture, the architecture/interior design crew behind some of Calgary’s most successful venues (Pigeonhole, National Beerhall, Double Zero, Last Best), the team at Boxcar Cafe are currently remodelling their new digs, with the intention to create an inviting space for patrons to kick back in and enjoy a game or two.
Planning a staggered opening, Boxcar Cafe’s main floor will open up first in February with capacity for 26 people. Then come April, the second floor will be open up, expanding the total capacity to around 40 people.
Boxcar Cafe plans to showcase one food menu, which will carry items suitable for both lunch and dinner. Entrees will include various hot sandwiches, flatbreads and popular sharing items. “The emphasis is on food that can be shared,” says co-owner Wylon Wong, “[we] want to create a social environment, where interaction with others is a priority.”
Game experts/servers will be able to teach a select number of popular games. Pricing is $5/person Monday to Thursday, $2.50/hour Friday to Sunday.
