April is Jazz Appreciation Month and what better way to show your love for the genre than by taking in some live jazz? There’s certainly no shortage of events and concerts that are joining the party around Calgary this month, so here are a few jazz-catering venues to help get you started.
Lolita’s Lounge
Tucked away in the heart of Calgary’s Inglewood neighbourhood, Lolita’s intimate 1940s-style space offers a unique assortment of live entertainment in a variety of genres. Fridays are reserved for Just Jazz, a series that brings in a wide range of jazz artists to the stage.
This month, you won’t want to miss the Althea Cunningham Duo’s neo-soul and jazz tribute to India Arie on April 22 or the MAPL Quintet’s takes on the works of Canadian songwriters like Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen on April 29.

Kawa Espresso Bar
In partnership with JazzyYYC, Kawa Espresso Bar is hosting an all-ages, weekly Jazz Jam on Saturday afternoons from 3 to 6 p.m. that runs from though June. The coffeehouse, which also offers a selection of beers and wine later in the evening, attracts a great lineup of musicians including pianist Michelle Grégoire on April 23 and local jazz legend Al Muirhead on April 30.

Lobby Lounge
Every Thursday, the Lobby Lounge at the Hotel Blackfoot features a pianist with various live vocal accompaniments, as well as monthly performances by jazz ensembles. Catch the Kait Shane Quartet on April 21 and the Aimee-Jo Benoit Duo on April 28, and enjoy the music alongside the lounge’s delicious food and drink menu.

Ironwood Stage & Grill
The Ironwood is an all-ages restaurant and lounge that hosts live music every night. Welcoming all genres, the stage is often saved for jazz and patrons won’t want to miss regular performances through until October by the Prime Time Big Band — led by Dave Jones, featuring vocalist Deanna Matley, and celebrating their 21st year together, the group is comprised of some of Calgary’s most respected jazz musicians.
