The 10 best things to watch on Netflix Canada in June

Netflix had a lot to dish out for the month of May, with season two of Master of None, and season 5 of House of Cards.

It also included Netflix announcing that they have canceled two of their original series in Sense8 and The Get Down due to soaring production costs and probably streaming analytics that couldn’t justify the money spent.

But that was May and this is June, and the streaming giant is still putting out some great original content and movies that demand eyeballs.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children

This dark fantasy film, which is based on the popular novel by Ransom Riggs, is directed by Tim Burton. The flick is a visual delight and is about a boy named Jake who discovers clues to a mystery that leads him to Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. The danger and mystery deepen as he gets to know the residents and learns about their special powers.

The Edge of Seventeen

One of the best films of 2016 is now on Netflix. This coming of age story is about a high school junior named Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld), who is already at peak awkwardness when her all-star older brother Darian (Blake Jenner) starts dating her best friend Krista (Haley Lu Richardson). Very strong performances in this film including some great scenes between Steinfeld and Woody Harrelson.

Orange is the New Black – Season 5

Season 4 ended with a pretty big cliffhanger, and now we finally have season five to give us answers. There are so many subplots that haven’t been resolved and a whole number of potentially deadly outcomes to Litchfield Penitentiary’s current state of emergency.  Still considered one of the best shows on Netflix, so lock yourself up in solitary confinement and binge.

Shutter Island

One of Martin Scorsese’s creepiest films that most definitely plays with your head. When a brilliant murderess escapes from Ashecliffe Hospital, US Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his partner (Mark Ruffalo) investigate the fortress-like insane asylum. As their investigation deepens, Teddy must come to terms with his own dark fears if he hopes to make it off the island alive. DiCaprio gives another great performance alongside Ruffalo and Ben Kingsley.

A Man Called Ove

Based on the 2012 novel by Fredrik Backman, this story is about a man named Ove who is the quintessential angry old man next door. He is an isolated retiree who enforces neighbourhood block association rules that he only cares about and when he is not yelling at his neighbours to get off his lawn, he is visiting his wife’s grave.

After a boisterous young family moves in next door and flattens Ove’s mailbox, an unlikely friendship forms. This foreign film was nominated for an Oscar at the 2017 Academy Awards and should definitely be on your viewing list.

Moana

Disney can do no wrong when it comes to their animated films, and 2016’s Moana was a big hit with families. This Oscar-nominated film is about an adventurous teenager (Auli’i Cravalho) who sails out on a daring missing to save her people. During her mission she meets up with a once-mighty demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a mater way-finder. This is your pretty standard Disney fare with a message blended in with some comedy and catchy songs.

20th Century Women

Cast: Annette Bening, Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig, Lucas Jade Zumann, Billy Crudup

This Academy Award-nominated film is a coming of age story about a teenage boy who is raised by his single mom and two other women during the late 70s in Southern California. The cast is great and features fantastic performances by Annette Benning, Elle Fanning, and Greta Gerwig. This is one of those slices of life films that has heart and is deeply poignant.

GLOW (Season 1)

This Netflix original series is based on a true story and takes us into the world of women’s professional wrestling in the early 80s. Alison Brie stars as Ruth Wilder, and out-of-work actress living in Los Angeles who stumbles upon a chance to become a female wrestler for a promotion called GLOW (Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling). She and 12 other Hollywood misfits learn the art of wrasslin’ and form a bond and a legacy that is still talked about today.

Cast:  Tilda Swinton, Lily Collins, Paul Dano, Devon Bostick, Steven Yeun, Shirley Henderson, Jake Gyllenhaal

This South Korean-American action-adventure movie was produced by Brad Pitt and includes  a fantastic cast with the likes of Tilda Swinton, Paul Dano, Jake Gyllenhaal along with South Korean child actor Ahn Seo-hyun and more. The story centres around a young girl named Mija who risks everything to prevent a powerful, multi-national company from kidnapping her best friend – a massive animal named Okja.

Gypsy – Season 1

A thrilling new series follows Jean Holloway, a therapist who develops dangerous and intimate relationships with the people in her patients’ lives. This looks like a saucy and riveting drama with a great cast.
