These beautiful Canadian islands prove that you don’t need to leave the country to have your very own island getaway.

From Vancouver Island, a gorgeous gem in the Pacific Northwest, to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia’s jewel on the East Coast, there’s no end to the mesmerizing destinations that can be found within our borders.

To add to Canada’s extensive list of accolades and recognition as a travel destination, three Canadian islands were recently ranked on a list of the best islands in Canada, part of Travel + Leisure’s 2018 World’s Best Awards.

The annual list is compiled by the New York-based travel magazine and research firm M&RR. Nominations were then voted on by some four million readers.

Travellers are constantly lured to Prince Edward Island, Canada’s sole island province, which took the third-highest spot on this year’s list. The “rust-tinted dunes, beaches, and green pastures” are met with a culinary scene that “draws seafood lovers from around the world.”

Vancouver Island is described as embodying “the best of leisure activities, whether [one] prefers browsing in one-of-a-kind boutiques, hopping a boat for whale watching, or hiking in a gorgeous temperate rainforest.”

Between Victoria, Nanaimo, and Tofino, to name just a few locations, locals and tourists alike flock to the island by ferry year-round to take in the immersive greenery and British Columbian charm.

The beloved BC island finished second, falling just short of Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Island, which took first place for the third year in a row.

Cape Breton is a renowned destination for hiking. The Cabot Trail takes hikers through a national park along the coastline. Visitors are also mesmerized by Pollett’s Cove, a wilderness estuary on the northwest coast of the island.
