Liberals drop footage of Andrew Scheer condemning same-sex marriage in old video

It’s an election year, and every vote counts. And as October draws closer, the Liberal Party shared a video on Thursday that shows Conservative leader Andrew Scheer giving a speech condemning same-sex marriage.

The video, posted to Twitter by Minister of Public Safety Ralph Goodale, is of Scheer during his days as an MP in Saskatchewan.

“To be a leader for all Canadians, the Conservative Party leader should now end his lifelong boycott of Pride events and explain whether he would still deny same-sex couples the right to marry, as he said in Parliament,” said Goodale.

Goodale continues to say that Scheer has been an MP for 5,533 days, but still hasn’t found time to celebrate Pride, “and thus defend EVERY Canadian’s human rights.”

The newly surfaced Scheer speech was dropped during Ottawa Pride week, and Goodale asks Scheer to begin celebrating Pride in Ottawa this weekend.

The controversial video has a young Scheer speaking out against same-sex marriage, comparing it to calling a dog’s tail a leg.

“There is nothing more important to society than the raising of children, for its very survival requires it,” Sheer said. “Homosexual unions are by nature contradictory to this. There is no complementarity of the sexes. Two members of the same sex may use their God-given free will to engage in acts, to cohabit and to own property together. They may commit themselves to monogamy. They may pledge to remain in a loving relationship for life.”

He continues to say they cannot commit to procreation or marriage.

“In that sense they have many of the collateral features of marriage, but they do not have its inherent feature, as they cannot commit to the natural procreation of children. They cannot therefore be married,” he said, in the video that’s now been viewed over 110,000 times.

“How many legs would a dog have if he counted the tail as a leg? The answer is just four. Just because a tail is called a leg does not make it a leg,” Sheer said. “If this bill passes, government and individual Canadians will be forced to call a tail a leg, nothing more.”

Every other leader of a major party was spotted at Pride celebrations across Canada this year.

In a video shared by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau from Pride in Vancouver, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh is seen alongside Trudeau and Green Party’s Elizabeth May as they marched together.

“The resurfacing of Andrew Scheer’s disgusting prejudice against LGBTQI2S+ people and families is very painful for many Canadians,” Singh said in a statement. “This is exactly why, if Canadians deliver a minority government in October, I will not prop up Andrew Scheer and the Conservatives. We can’t trust Mr. Scheer on his caucus to champion the fundamental rights of Canadians.”

Scheer has yet to respond to the video.
