Andrew Scheer is resigning as Conservative Party leader.

Scheer lost to Justin Trudeau during the October federal election. He made the announcement in the House of Commons on Thursday morning.

“This was the most difficult decision I have ever had to make,” Scheer said. “I have announced my intention to step down as the Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada once a new Leader is elected. I am putting my party first and my family first.”

Andrew Scheer has been the leader of the Conservative Party and Leader of the Official Opposition since 2017. As an MP, he represents the riding of Regina—Qu’Appell in Saskatchewan – a position he has held since 2004.
