If you are looking to buy a home this year, a new survey has revealed what Albertans are aiming to do to be able to afford one.
The digital real estate platform Wahi’s survey of Angus Reid Forum members found that only 17% of Albertans plan to buy a home in 2025, which is consistent with overall Canadian homebuyer intentions. That number is down from 25% in 2024, suggesting growing financial pressures are reshaping homeownership goals across the province.
When it comes to Albertans still dreaming of homeownership in 2025, respondents said they were willing to make that dream a reality:
- 16% plan to work extra hours to improve their financial situation;
- 29% intend to cut back on discretionary spending;
- 15% will modify their investment strategies;
- 67% are open to exploring different neighbourhoods or locations than originally planned;
- 57% are willing to consider a different home type or style than their initial preference; and
- 49% would purchase a home requiring renovations or repairs.
“These findings suggest that while Albertans remain eager to enter the housing market, they are also becoming more flexible in their expectations. Many are rethinking their ideal home and location in response to rising costs and economic uncertainty. As affordability remains a concern, prospective buyers are also demonstrating a willingness to make trade-offs to achieve homeownership,” the report added.
These findings are from a survey conducted by Wahi from December 12 to 16, 2024, among a representative sample of 1,524 online Canadians.
