Routines may be returning and classes back in session, but Albertaās summer isnāt done yet, with a warm September in the forecast from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).
We spoke with Christy Climenhaga, a scientist at ECCC, to get a sense of what the weather has in store for the month ahead.
Currently, the forecast indicates warmer-than-normal conditions for the month. āSo, that doesnāt mean every day will be hot,ā Climenhaga says. āBut that means our models are kind of peeking at more of those above normal days than below normal.ā
Where you are in the province also makes a difference. Northern Alberta has higher confidence for a warm September, while Edmonton and Calgary sit at medium confidence.
As for rain, itās a bit harder to pin down, Climenhaga noted. Most of Alberta isnāt showing a clear trend, though thereās a slightly wetter-than-normal stretch along the foothills near Calgary, which could reach toward Edmonton.
Hereās what typical September temps look like:
- Edmonton: Mean 11.9°C, average high 17.6°C
- Calgary: Mean 11.5°C, average high 18.3°C
Seasonal forecasts are about the big picture, not day-to-day swings, Climenhaga also mentioned. Sudden heatwaves or cold snaps can still change the monthly average. For example, as weāve seen this week, a late-August heat spike could make an otherwise cool summer look warmer overall.
So, expect a slightly warmer-than-normal September, but donāt be surprised if the weather throws a few curveballs. And enjoy what could be a beautiful extended summer in Alberta!
