Residents of a town in northern Alberta must be bundled up this morning, as it is one of the coldest spots on Earth today, barely being beat out by a spot in Antarctica.

According to a new weather report from WX-Now, which tracks the world’s most extreme weather, an Alberta town almost topped the list of the top 10 coldest places on the planet on Saturday, February 15, with an Alberta spot landing in second place.

High Level, with a population of more than 4,000 people, is sitting at a bone-chilling -38°C, while a flurry of other Canadian spots landed in the top 10, including Cold Lake in 10th place at a numbing -37°C.

Only the Amundsen-Scott weather station in Antarctica beat Alberta out for the top spot, with a temperature of -43°C and there is also a wind chill present there, and factoring that in it feels like -51°C. Brrr!

Extreme cold warnings are currently in place across Alberta, including High Level. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says extremely cold wind chill values between minus 40 and minus 45 continue. Wind chill values will moderate today but are expected to return tonight. The extremely cold wind chills will continue into early next week before coming to an end.

“Extreme cold puts everyone at risk. Watch for cold-related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes. Dress warmly. Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant,” ECCC added.

If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside. Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill create an elevated risk to health such as frostbite and hypothermia.
