Residents of a small town in northern Alberta must be bundled up this morning, as it is one of the coldest spots on Earth today.
According to a new weather report from WX-Now, which tracks the world’s most extreme weather, Canada topped the top 10 coldest places on the planet on Monday, February 3, with an Alberta spot landing in third place.
High Level, with a population just shy of 4,000 people, is sitting at a bone-chilling -39°C, while Watson Lake in the Yukon took the top spot for the coldest place in the world today, at a numbing -44°C.

Extreme cold warnings are currently in place across Alberta, including High Level. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says extremely cold wind chill values near -40°C are expected or occurring. While temperatures will moderate somewhat during the daytime hours, nighttime and early morning wind chills near -40°C will likely continue for parts of Alberta until the middle of the week.
“Extreme cold puts everyone at risk. Watch for cold-related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes. Dress warmly. Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant,” ECCC added.
If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside. Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill create an elevated risk to health such as frostbite and hypothermia.
