Alberta fuel tax is now on hold until 2027
Albertans will pay 13 cents less per litre at the pump starting next month, as the Province suspends its fuel tax for the rest of 2026.
The Alberta government announced Tuesday that it will suspend the full provincial fuel tax from Oct. 31 through Dec. 31.
“With global uncertainty and prices rising, we are ensuring Albertans have the support they need to address the higher costs of everyday essentials,” said Jason Nixon, president of the Treasury Board and minister of finance.
The Province says it will monitor pump prices to ensure savings are passed on to Albertans and will take action against businesses that price gouge at the pumps.

As of Sept. 21, retail gas prices in Alberta averaged $1.75 per litre, compared to the Canadian average of $1.90 per litre.
Alberta’s Fuel Tax Relief Program, which adjusts tax rates for gasoline and diesel quarterly, suspends the Province’s 13-cent fuel tax whenever oil prices are at or above $90.
The most recent period, which determined the fuel tax rate for the quarter beginning Oct. 1, ran from Aug. 18 to Sept. 15. The average WTI price during that time was $90.54.
Fuel tax rates are reviewed every three months, with the next review covering the quarter beginning Jan. 1, 2027. That period will run from Nov. 17 to Dec. 15, with the next fuel tax rate to be announced afterward.
