It may be the start of summer but that isn’t stopping snow from falling in Alberta, with some areas forecast to receive upwards of 30 centimetres.
Snowfall warnings issued for some areas in the Alberta Rockies by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) which stated that snowfall with total amounts of 25 to 30 cm is expected, and heavy snow continues in some locations.
Snowfall amounts are highly variable, and total accumulations of 10 to 20 cm are expected for portions of Kananaskis Country, though upwards of 30 cm of snow are expected for Highwood Pass.
Five centimetres of snow are expected for portions of the Cowboy Trail in the M.D. of Ranchland, as well as other areas of higher terrain in that region before snow ending tonight.
“Rapidly accumulating snow will make travel difficult. Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop,” ECCC added.

Parts of Alberta are also drenched thanks to a system that dropped massive amounts of rain yesterday afternoon, with rainfall amounts near 100 mm being reported. ECCC stated that the highest amounts have been reported over the foothills to the west and southwest of Calgary. Snow was also reported in Kananaskis Village and near Bragg Creek this morning.
It’s shaping up to be a chilly evening in some parts of Alberta too, with frost advisories being issued due to patchy frost expected to develop as temperatures drop to near zero in the regions impacted. ECCC cautioned you should cover up plants, especially those in frost-prone areas. Take preventative measures to protect frost-sensitive plants and trees.
