Alberta sees second coronavirus death, bringing Canada's total to 26

The Province of Alberta announced its second COVID-19-related death during a press conference on Tuesday.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw made the announcement at 3:30 pm MST, stating that the fatal case was a woman in her 80s who had been a resident at the Mckenzie Towne Continuing Care Centre in Calgary.

One staff member and two other residents of the facility are among the new cases of coronavirus, and 11 other residents are showing symptoms.

The news comes just under a week after Alberta saw its first death related to coronavirus on March 19, with a man in his 60s dying after being admitted to the ICU in Edmonton on March 12.

The man who died on Thursday had underlying medical conditions, Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw stated at the March 19 announcement.

The new death in Alberta brings Canada’s total fatalities up to 26 as of March 24.
