Alberta is reportedly moving to permanent daylight saving time

Alberta could soon spring forward for good, with the province reportedly moving to permanent daylight saving time, according to a report published this morning by the Calgary Herald.

While the province hasn’t officially confirmed the move, a spokesperson told Daily Hive that legislation is expected to be introduced later this week.

“We plan to introduce a red tape reduction omnibus bill later this week that will amend eighteen different pieces of legislation to streamline processes and improve services,” said Kevin Lee, press secretary for the Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction. “We will have more information to share then.”

The news comes weeks after the province signalled it was considering the change, in response to neighbouring B.C., which did away with biannual clock changes earlier this year.

With Saskatchewan to the east already on a fixed time year-round, Premier Danielle Smith said in March that Alberta was considering the move.

“With B.C. announcing this change [today], both our neighbours to the west and east — British Columbia and Saskatchewan — will no longer have a time change. B.C. will now be using year-round daylight saving time, and Saskatchewan uses year-round standard time,” she said in early March.

“This raises the question of whether Alberta should also move to end the time change to create consistency across the western provinces.”

The conversation isn’t new. In October 2021, a provincial referendum asked voters whether to adopt permanent daylight saving time. Of those who cast a ballot, 50.2 per cent voted to continue changing clocks twice a year.

Moving to permanent daylight saving time would mean keeping summer hours year-round. If the legislation passes, Alberta would no longer observe standard time, meaning darker winter mornings but more daylight in the evening.
